The phrase “dark Satanic Mills” is usually associated with the industrial revolution, but this short video suggests an alternative source in John Milton’s poetry.

The phrase “dark Satanic Mills” from the poem best known as Jerusalem is often interpreted as a reference to the industrial revolution. Blake, however, is more likely to have taken inspiration from the poet John Milton, in particular his verse drama Samson Agonistes.
