The Marriage of Heaven and Hell began life as an anti-Swedenborg tract, but while Blake was scathing about the eminent philosopher, his opinions transformed during his lifetime.

Without the writings of the Swedish mystic, Emanuel Swedenborg, Blake would never have written The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, and while he may have been scathing about Swedenborg in that text his relationship with the philosopher was much more profound.
